The METRO Show Recasts Nomenclature for the "A" Word The METRO Show Recasts Nomenclature for the "A" Word (1010 KB)

In today’s world of art and collecting, the word antiques has come to be regarded as more than just a little . . . antiquated. Now the term Historical Design has arisen to embrace the encyclopedic range of decorative arts from the 16th through 20th centuries. Calling this rich mixture by the term “antiques” is outmoded and outworn, and no one is more aware of that than the participants in this year’s METRO Show.

Metro Show and Editions/Artists’ Book Fair Don’t be fooled by the name. The Metro Show, the art and antiques fair going on this week at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea, is not a display of sophisticated urbanity. A two-year-old reincarnation of the event formerly known as the American Antiques Show, it does feature 34 dealers trafficking in an extraordinarily wide range of materials, from ancient Andean textiles at William Siegal’s booth to a wooden model of a French W.. NEW YORK — A dealer-who-shall-not-be-named shot me an exasperated look when I tried to get her to open up about how the Metro Show was going. "This is a really boring show, I know." This sort of frankness is a journalistic gold nugget, particularly during the first day of a small fair. Nevertheless, I think this dealer may have just been sitting on the wrong side of the room. The Metro Show, which emerged last year from the ashes of the American Folk Art Museum-run American Antiques F.. Continues:

ZIGZAG at METRO

A flowing, jagged wall structure called “Zigzag” will greet visitors of the METRO Show and E|AB Fair, guiding them from the building entrance through the inner lobby and into the main exhibition space.  This dramatic installation offers, in the words of the designers, an “iconic arrival”, and visually unites the two entry spaces and the main floor.    More
